“The King of Rock and Soul,” Solomon Burke, was born in Philadelphia in 1940 and first became known in his home town as the “Wonder Boy Preacher” in the 1950s before scoring his first hit record, “Just Out Of Reach Of My Open Arms,” in 1960.
Solomon Burke was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, and his career experienced a major resurgence soon after that with the 2002 release of the Grammy-winning Don’t Give Up On Me, which featured new songs written especially for the album by Bob Dylan, Brian Wilson, Van Morrison, Tom Waits, Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe.
Burke released his first album in 1962 and Like A Fire, is his 35th (including compilations and live recordings). In between, his songs have been covered by everyone from The Rolling Stones and Tom Petty to The Blues Brothers and Bruce Springsteen. And along the way, Burke has become an entrepreneur with a chain of mortuaries, a bishop in the House of God for All People and a father of 21 (and grandfather of 88).
Like A Fire features new songs written specifically for Burke by Eric Clapton, Keb’ Mo’, Jesse Harris, Danny Kortchmar, Steve Jordan (who produced and plays on the album) and Ben Harper, who plays guitar and duets with The King on his composition “A Minute To Rest And A Second To Pray.”

LABEL Shout! Factory
In The Name Of Love: Africa Celebrates U2 is a new album that commemorates the sound and culture of Africa with a musical tribute to Bono and U2. A portion of the record’s proceeds will directly benefit The Global Fund (www.theglobalfund.org).
In The Name Of Love: Africa Celebrates U2 features several Grammy-winning and Grammy-nominated African artists, including Angelique Kidjo, Les Nubians, Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars (with Aerosmith’s Joe Perry), Vieux Farka Touré, Vusi Mahlasela and The Soweto Gospel Choir.
In The Name Of Love: Africa Celebrates U2 was produced by Shawn Amos and Paul Heck. “Paul and I wanted to develop an easy entry point for the growing global community where they could get more involved and learn something deeper about Africa,” says Amos, who was initially inspired to make the album by his work in South Africa while running the Quincy Jones Listen Up Foundation. “It’s really a focus on the key successes of several regions, and the African artists who originate from these areas. This is a project which celebrates Africa!”
“I was amazed when we approached the artists of how quickly they chose the songs they wanted to do. Many of them grew up listening to U2, and knew the songs so well.” adds co-producer Heck, whose work includes the Red Hot… series of AIDS benefit albums.
African-born, New York City-based artist and humanitarian Angelique Kidjo contributes the album’s lead-off track, her version of Achtung Baby’s “Mysterious Ways.” Kidjo has been a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since 2002 and she also founded the Batonga Foundation (www.batongafoundation.org).

The kicker is that Wyclef happened to see Patten’s version of “Sweetest Girl” and personally invited Dave to open for him in Atlantic City.
Patten is a multi-instrumentalist who plays guitar, drums, bass and keys in addition to singing. Throughout high school, he played drums in a local band called Stepping Stone.
Dave, who was once honored as the Grand Marshall for the Haverford Township Day Parade, says his dream gig would be “playing a festival with Gavin DeGraw and Maroon 5, and no rain!”

This was the case when I first heard Natasha singing a folk song in her native Russian. When combined with meaningful, introspective, and intimately personal lyrics like those on Cheap Escape, the result is music with undeniable depth and substance. CD Picking Daisies

LABEL RedCard Records
Shelly Bhushan (pronounced boo-SHAWN) is a Texas native who now calls New York City home.
She’s sung everything from choral to swing, funk to classical, but wishing to do more Shelly moved to NYC to front a rock & soul band that didn’t work out. Her first release was the four-song EP The Shelly Show in 2005.
Picking Daisies is Bhushan’s first full-length, and features 10 original tunes, eight of which were co-written with the members of her band.
“Like [Billie] Holiday, Bhushan has a voice that reaches as far as a rocket’s flair glare. Both women are trailblazers when it comes to singing blues, soul, and pop melodies but Bhushan’s laments have a unique upbeat tilt to them that magnetically causes her to bounce back from any bout of melancholia transcribed in her lyrics.” —Hybrid magazine

ALEX WOODARD
“Beautiful Now”
AVAILABLE FOR AIRPLAY now
CD Alex Woodard
ON SALE 8/19
LABEL Woodshack Music/Adrenaline Music Group
Alex Woodard, who grew up surfing in Southern California now lives in a beach town just north of San Diego, worked as a child actor, appearing on such programs as Battlestar Galactica and The Love Boat, as well as in commercials for Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, Skippy Peanut Butter and more.
With a degree from UCLA in Business Economics Alex moved to Boston to work for a mutual funds company. Finding it unfulfilling, he got a job in Seattle with a small online company. “I started as a temp and had no idea what the company did, let alone what the Internet was,” Woodard says, “but it turned out I was working for the folks who created the compression technology for streaming media over the Internet, RealNetworks. And a lot of musicians worked there because the focus was on music and technology.”
Alex taught himself to play piano and guitar in high school, and as he made new friends, he started writing songs and playing his own music with them. He released his debut CD in 2000 and followed it up with three more, including the Pete Droge-produced Mile High in 2005. Last year’s Up With The Sun CD earned Woodard a Singer/Songwriter Of The Year nod at the LA Music Awards.
For his new, self-titled album, Alex co-produced with Rex Schnelle (Bon Jovi, Brooks & Dunn, Tim McGraw), John Would (Graham Parker, Warren Zevon) and Martin Feveyear (The Presidents Of The United States Of America, John Wesley Harding, The Minus 5). Nickel Creek’s Sara Watkins contributed vocals and violin to the sessions, while Alex’s longtime drummer Brian Young (Fountains Of Wayne, The Posies, America) keeps the backbeat.
With this CD, Alex focused on a theme that we all celebrate and struggle with. “No matter what road you travel, you’re getting older,” Woodard says. “I really tried to look at the love, loss, hope, and struggles we all face as the seasons start running together, and it seemed to me to be about how hard it is to live in the moment when the moments are passing by so fast. Maybe getting older should be celebrated with wisdom and grace, not with an empty attempt to turn back the clock.”
