AND ANOTHER THING Before settling on her chosen career as a singer/songwriter, Texas-born/Long Island-raised Malea McGuinness studied opera at such prestigious institutions as Tanglewood, the Oberlin Conservatory and the Manhattan School of Music. After landing a featured role on Broadway in The King And I, Malea relocated to Los Angeles, taught herself guitar and concentrated on writing her own songs. Close As Air follows up her debut CD, 2007’s True Believer.

AND ANOTHER THING Landon Pigg, whose “Falling In Love At A Coffee Shop” was featured in two big national TV ad campaigns, had hardly started recording his second album, The Boy Who Never, when he was chosen by director Drew Barrymore to play the part of a musician in her directorial debut, Whip It! Landon took advantage of the pianos in various hotel bars and continued to write more songs for the album while filming on location in and around Detroit.

AND ANOTHER THING In 2009, Joe Bonamassa was named Best Blues Guitarist by Guitar Player magazine readers for the third straight year; his CD, The Ballad Of John Henry, topped the Billboard blues chart for six months; and Eric Clapton jammed with him onstage at Bonamassa’s concert at London’s Royal Albert Hall. Bonamassa recorded his eighth studio album, Black Rock, in Santorini, Greece, and brought in some Greek musicians to add a bit of a “world” flavor here and there.

AND ANOTHER THING The Toler/Townsend Band’s self-titled debut CD germinated years ago when singer Johnny Townsend and guitarist “Dangerous” Dan Toler were in Gregg Allman’s band together. Townsend was half of Sanford And Townsend (“Smoke From A Distant Fire”) and he’s also written with and/or played with Loggins & Messina, Fleetwood Mac and The Allman Brothers Band, among others. Toler has played with almost every legendary Southern rock band out there (The Allman Brothers Band, Great Southern, The Outlaws, The Marshall Tucker Band).

AND ANOTHER THING Bad Boy Leroy is Michael Leroy Schultz, who grew up in San Augustine, Texas, and started playing guitar and writing songs soon after he enlisted in the Air Force. Deployed to Afghanistan, he joined a band made up of civilian and military players, and although he left the service in 2005, he continues to make his home in Afghanistan as a civilian contractor. Bad Boy Leroy, his first CD, was already finished when Leroy wrote “Late Night Lovin’.”

Relocating to Rome briefly, Panettieri rekindled her friendship with Sammartino and when LaValle came to visit, Greta’s Bakery was born. After moving to NYC, Greta’s Bakery made The Edge Of Everything and opened for Joe Jackson in Europe. “If This Ain’t Love” is by Steve Christanthau and John Beck, who co-wrote Corinne Bailey Rae’s “Put Your Records On.”

Gracen, meanwhile, is the author of I Saw Her Standing There, a Paul McCartney bio published by Billboard Books. This is an album cut; the focus track is “Fire Eyes.”

AND ANOTHER THING Last year, in an episode of Fox-TV’s Bones, one of the characters made a mix tape of “the six greatest break-up songs”; the songs were by Sia, Mazzy Star, José González, Antony And The Johnsons and an unsigned singer/songwriter/pianist from Seattle named Aaron English. You can’t buy publicity like that. English’s third album, American [Fever] Dream, was recorded in a studio located in the converted boiler room of a 150-year-old Seattle warehouse.

AND ANOTHER THING When Robert Francis was nine, family friend Ry Cooder gave him his first National Slide guitar; Francis began writing his own songs years later after a painful break-up, and those songs became his first album, 2007’s One By One. Francis, now in his early 20s, made his second CD (and major-label debut), Before Nightfall, with his regular bandmates—bassist Alex Kweskin, drummer Richard Gowen and guitarist Graham Lathrop.
